I do not consider myself a professional quilter, so I would never judge anyone elses. I think a lot depends on individual tastes. If we all quilted alike it would get pretty boring I think.

After having to rush to finish two quilts for Christmas presents this week I definitely have to categorize myself as a novice quilter as I noticed tons of imperfections in my quilts that I wish I would have had time to correct. However, to nonquilters I suppose they are wonderful creations as those that have seen them keep complimenting them (they must have flown by on a galloping horse). Thankfully we all have different likes and dislikes as I keep seeing projects of others that are great inspirations to me and I see others that I can walk away from easily. Good thing I don't love everything as I'm already in the mode of too many patterns, too little time. I would never criticize anything that another person has created as I know only too well that each of us has our own step that is very difficult to us. To improve in our skills means we have to keep practicing and if we get too much criticism we tend to quit creating which means we don't get the practice to improve. I would never want to be a person to stop someone from being creative. Sew on my friends, sew on. Merry Christmas to all!!

I think people have different tastes in colors, patterns, and differing levels of tolerance for defects. If someone is having fun quilting, that's the most important thing to me. I'll tell someone if I love their quilt, but to tell them I don't? That would seem arrogant to me. What business do I have questioning any of the above on someone else's quilt.

We are all at different levels and I appreciate that when I look back at things I have done and wish I had know then how to do it better. I was happy with it at the time.

I am sure when I learned how to walk - my parents didn't tell me I wasn't doing it good enough...they praised me and encouraged me to try again....and you know what I can walk pretty good now!! LOL

If I can't say something nice I usually don't say anything. We are at many different levels of quilting and each quilt is an accomplishment for someone. We should be encouraging rather than being critical.

99% of the time I can find something about even an ugly quilt I like and can comment favorably. Occasionally I have found myself with my back to the wall and say something like "It's like some men I've met...just not my type." I have a couple of very close friends that I will be honest with if they ask, and they would do the same for me.

People put their heart and soul and time into the quilts they make. If I don't like it, I either don't comment or try to give a positive comment. Who am I to say that a quilt is not good just because it isn't my taste. I would always try to encourage a quilter. Their next quilt may be better. Also, they may not like mine. Unless someone specifically says they don't like the quilt they made and ask for suggestions to make it better, I would keep my mouth shut. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.

I just don't say anything if it is not something positive. I have a quilt top finished that is just real bad. I found the flannel pieces all cut out at a church basement sale and I bought it for 50 cents. I was just sick that someone went through all this cutting the navy and cream color fannel and they were just asking 50 cents. I bought it and I was convinced that the person passed on and I told her, don,t worry I will finish it. I did not know what pattern it was supposed to be and I cut some of the squars in half and then they did not fit anything else. I put it aside and then 3 or 4 yrs later igot it out again and added some red fannel. It is all uneven and not many seams match. It is checkered and my daughter likes that because she has a mini cooper and had some checkers put on it. I decided to finsh it anyway and she could put it in the car for the dogs to lay on or if she got stuck somewhere she would not get cold. There is something about it that it is special now. Almost like a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree.

Once, when I was in a manic situation, I saw one that was terrible. I said I didn't think that I would choose that particularly shade of green and yellow. It was a donation quilt and it was really bad but I felt bad after saying anything, so I agree. Try to find something positive to ssy or keep your mouth shut.
