I am a visual person be it quilting, crocheting, other sewing, even decorating a cake! need directions & pictures!

Jshep 07-22-2010 06:30 AM

I am a visual person. I like to see it being done. Then hands on. Reading the instructions confuses me. Have you noticed that so often the same thing applies with recipes (want pictures)?

b.zang 07-22-2010 06:38 AM

I call it a curse. When I see a pattern, I have trouble visualizing it in other colours and have to lay fabric out before I can "see" it. I'm also quick to notice all kind of visual quirks which is most annoying especially when watching movies!

But, I do like mystery quilts. The instructions have pictures to get me through each step, and I like watching how the quilt progresses. Mystery quilts have taken me into patterns I would not have tried otherwise.

iltoaz 07-22-2010 06:48 AM

Need a picture.

Grama Lehr 07-22-2010 06:51 AM

I need the picture for reference!! I think it's funny when you pull out a pattern to make something and the grandkids can't "picture" it in the fabrics or colors they want. I keep trying to explain to them that I can make it in any color their little heart desires!

tryitall 07-22-2010 08:10 AM

Most definitely need some type of picture or written directions. Too much trouble to figure one item out when there are soooo many directions for boocoo's of other things I would like to do.

DianD 07-22-2010 08:15 AM

Yes, I must have pictures! I try to break new tasks down into very simple steps, and have found that I do well if I just take my time and don't get frustrated...I also talk to myself a lot...my husband says that I'm trying to teach myself! I can see a quilt in a set of colors and picture it in other colors, so, its a give-and-take!

Ms. Shawn 07-22-2010 08:27 AM

I am a very visual learner but will try things at least once without pictures. :P

ruthieg 07-22-2010 08:33 AM

I need both especially if the directions are had to perceive. That is why I love the tutorials!

Surfergirl 07-22-2010 08:46 AM

Prefer picture along with instructions.

I am right there with you, Some time the written one leave out how to do and when to do it thinking you should know. If I knew I would not have to bought the pattern. :?

wendsy 07-22-2010 08:58 AM

Must have a picture of some sort-but usually I plan it out on graph paper before trying it!

baglady65 07-22-2010 10:14 AM

I need to see and read, they is why you see most patterns with pictures and words!

mrs. fitz 07-22-2010 10:25 AM

I want the picture, and even better, I like having someone just show me. That goes for quilting, learning a new game (reading the rules mean nothing), travel directions, with the exception being a recipe.

NovisQuilter 07-22-2010 10:51 AM

Not only do I need visuals, I need to touch, feel and almost taste it. lol I don't do well the with written tutorials. Sometimes pictures can stump me. I don't mind asking for help. Especially from this forum.

grandme26 07-22-2010 11:12 AM

I like to use both pictures and the written instructions. I read and then look at the picture and then read again and then say. Yes, I see how it is done.

Roberta 07-22-2010 12:50 PM

I can't figure out written instruction and also need pictures. DVD's or tute's are even better for me. I can watch, pause and then do the step. I know, old age is coming in quickly

Yes, I'm a visual person. I can look at pictures of how something is done and do it much better than reading directions and figuring it out from that.

This is me all over!

nana20010 07-22-2010 01:47 PM

with out picters i`m like a new born very visual hands on

nellie 07-22-2010 02:02 PM

Love to stitch 07-22-2010 02:42 PM

Pictures definately. I am a visual learner in just about everything I do.

Debbie1 07-22-2010 03:10 PM

I actually can figure out a pattern just from the picture in most cases - so I'm like you, need that picture!

Maybe1day 07-22-2010 03:14 PM

Hi Barbara, until recently I would have said - yes I am a visual person, no picture and I can't see the end result so I would pass it by.
However yesterday I decided to experiment and made 2 table mats to put in a hamper for Christmas presents. As the two mats were sitting there partially completed while I decided what to use/do next I suddenly thought "this is making a nice pattern, if I leave this centre here square it will make a great looking quilt block" .
So I promptly phoned my LQS (an hour away) and asked her to save me what was left on the rolls of sale fabric that I had bought the day before so I could buy it next week when I go down there.
Now I am hoping I haven't bitten off more than I can chew!

Maybe1day

IMHO we are all very visual as we are artistic people. If some are blessed to also be literal learners, how lucky. I can struggle and follow written only directions, but I really need photos to make it easier for me.

Dkm 07-22-2010 03:55 PM

My thought: " A picture is worth a thousand words." I think this is the reason I have a very hard time of visually seeing a project. Looking at material....I see material. I have friends that say can't you see the sky, flowers, etc in that material???? My learning desire is to make art quilts, but without a picture to go by. No way.

Quilting Grandma 07-22-2010 03:57 PM

funny that you should bring this up..
We just got back from dinner at a Chinese restrurant and this was my fortune----
"You are more intuitive than logical. You often learn better by seeing and doing than by theorizing first. "
I like the pictures, it really helps to see where I am going.

lprice 07-22-2010 04:35 PM

I need pictures Instructions are better with pictures. And the help we get from each other on this board Thanks everyone.

Annz 07-22-2010 04:45 PM

Yea I prefer pictures as an aid. I also need to see a picture of a recipe in order for me to be interested in trying it.

Emma S 07-22-2010 05:49 PM

Granny 59 love your quilt! Part of the fun is looking at the quilt and deciding how it went together, then reading the instructions to see if I was right. The process is relaxing!

I teach high school students. I try to have projects at various stages for them, but sometimes even that doesn't help. sigh.

RugosaB 07-22-2010 06:46 PM

Before I was in a car accident, no pic was needed, I could just imagine . Now, my brain is different, and that's the best way to describe it, I need pictures. Even on menus, if we go to a place where it has pics, it's so much easier to decide, I just point to the photo and say "That"
But I have to keep the number of pics to a minimum, I have trouble making decisions too. Too many pics? Like when I go to Joann's and there's all this fabric! I can't decide
I joke that it's a good thing are kids are already born, I'd have a heck of a time deciding on their names. I even joke with my husband it's a good thing we're already married, I'd have such a hard time deciding to say yes or no, and I'd have to decide WHO LOL

Rugosab sorry for you injury. Love your spirit. Life is a process, you're obviously a winner.

PBCHRETIEN 07-22-2010 07:01 PM

I too am a visual person but often when following the pattern I make lots of changes to make it my own.

anniec55 07-22-2010 07:10 PM

Definitely! I am a hands on and very visual. I can skip written instructions completely but show me (after all I live in Missouri) or give me a picture and I'm good to go!

wraez 07-22-2010 07:32 PM

Yes, I'm with you... I'm visual and want lots of photos, in color no less. Same goes for magazines, books AND blogs.... the more photos, the more I am likely to return to view the eye candy.

warm quilt hugs, sue in CA

grandma Janice 07-22-2010 07:37 PM

I probably wouldn't try something if I couldn't see a picture. I even need pictures of recipes that peke my interest, so I guess I am a visual person.

DebbyT 07-22-2010 08:10 PM

I have little imangination. I need a reference.

Lady Shivesa 07-22-2010 08:11 PM

I usually need pictures, especially if the wording is a little confusing or the concept hard to explain.
