okay so here goes.
>>i don't like to touch batting.<<
there i've said it. i think it feels creepy. i can hardly wait to get the sandwich secured to the point where i can apply the binding and trim off the excess batting so i don't have to touch it. then i will go back and do more quilting. am i the only person here who feels this way, or the only one who will admit it??? or maybe i really am a weirdo!!! :(   :?

don't hate me because i'm strange.

Knot Sew 10-10-2008 09:20 AM

Mmmm ,all batting, or just certain kinds? You could use something else. flannel or buy inexpensive blankets.

I have a daughter who won't touch paper bags. She said they feel creepy :P

tlrnhi 10-10-2008 09:22 AM

There is some batting, that to me...it feels sticky. I don't like that stuff.

Quilt4u 10-10-2008 09:26 AM

I think it feels weird too.

Cathy M 10-10-2008 11:12 AM

how about wearing either cloth or rubber gloves? And don't worry, between all of us, we could write a huge book on all our foibles and oddities...ahhahahahaa... :) :) :) my personal list is huge and could have a chapter all my own.

babeegirl 10-10-2008 11:36 AM

I won't make hamburgers, I hate the way it feels:)

Butterflyspain 10-10-2008 11:52 AM

My ex could not touch a peach. Loved to eat them, so guess who had to peel them..........

sewnsewer2 10-10-2008 12:39 PM

I'm with you, the only batting that doesn't bother me the way it feels is warm & natural cotton batting. Anything with polyester is really rough on my hands.

ChristineD 10-10-2008 12:59 PM

I don't have a problem with battings...but I hate the feel of rubber bands....YUCK

bearisgray 10-10-2008 01:03 PM

The cotton warm and natural feels okay to me. By the way, it goes by some other name now - don't recall what it is.

I agree that the polyester battings feel weird. The kind that is sort of smooth is okay, but the fibrous ones - it's nice to get them covered up.

What are they called, anyway?

CissyQuilts 10-10-2008 01:08 PM

Well, I don't think you are strange. I HATE to touch cotton balls! It compares to nails on a chalkboard for me.

nanabirdmo 10-10-2008 01:12 PM

thanks for all the responses. i love hearing about all our different quirks.
i sure won't quit making quilts because i don't like the feel of batting (pretty much any kind), i will just deal and get it covered up asap.

Craftybug 10-10-2008 01:15 PM

No you are not weird. My DIL cousin will pass out if you touch her with a cotton ball. And me, I love my kitties but I don't like them rubbing on me it feel yucky.

Hedgie 10-10-2008 04:19 PM

No you are not weird. I have the same problem. I also don't like to touch it. I feel the same way about cotton in asprin bottles or in anything else.
No you are not weird

I'm finding out that I'm not as weird as I thought I was....thought it was just me that couldn't stand the cotton squeaking when I touched it.

nanabirdmo 10-10-2008 05:10 PM

well ruth, so far it is every kind of batting. i haven't worked with wool or some of the more exotic types.
don't get me wrong. i work with batting and won't stop. i love the way batting makes a quilt look and feel after it is confined inside the 2 layers of fabric. i just don't care for the way it feels.
hey, i'm tough :!: i can take it :!:

mamatobugboo 10-10-2008 05:26 PM

for me, it's when my kids lick food off of their clothes - gives me goosebumps and makes my bones shiver to even think about that texture of the tongue against the cotton weave...UGH! :?

joy 10-10-2008 06:08 PM

As a child I couldn't stand the feel of velvet.... fortunately I grew out of it.... have had a couple of lounge suits which have had the feel of velvet and also lounge curtains.... doesn't bother me now that I am older... lets say I have matured..... but I won't eat bananas, and that is another subject !!! Been like that all my life but like banana muffins and banana cake... but only about the last 5 years..... and I am ancient !!!

ddrobins1956 10-10-2008 06:15 PM

My oldest daughter actually turns pale if she has to touch a cotton ball. She always has to have one of her children pull the cotton out of the new bottle of Tylenol. She was very sensitive to touch as a child too. I've never known anyone but her that has that.
I have a phobia also. I haven't been on an escalator since I was a child. Believe me, it's not easy not to use escalators, but even if the elevator is buried way in the back of no where, I will find it and use that instead. I can not put my foot on that moving step. I want to, but I just can't. Weird, eh?

thimblebug6000 10-10-2008 06:30 PM

No problem with battings, although I mostly use the cotton type.....

I can muck around with a bowl of hamburger, no problem.....BUT give me a whole raw chicken or turkey....ggggggggg.......these little pale pink legs & cool clammy flesh....ggaaaggggg......it's like a murder mystery!

bearisgray 10-10-2008 08:01 PM

it's the turkey neck.

or a whole liver. or tongue. or brains. the stuff my in-laws would use. they did use everything but the moo or squeal.

sewaholic 10-11-2008 01:53 AM

I can't handle metal, or hold keys in my hands. Stainless steel ok. I used to have to put a hankie around the old school case handle. Makes my hands smell really bad.

I'm sorry thimblebug, but I'm sitting here laughing. lol. You do have a way with words....you describe that chicken/turkey so well I can feel it! Not making fun of you......I just had to giggle when I read your post.

Nope, not weird. I feel the same way, but I do get on them. Just takes me a couple of extra seconds. I always hesitate. If I'm wearing heels, forget about it!

I also don't like clowns. To me, they are totally creepy!!

Rose Marie 10-11-2008 10:09 AM

I wont touch a whole fish. And I cannot eat cream soups.
No problem with batting but sure wish it was not so fragile.

Quilter101 10-11-2008 10:52 AM

I'm alright with batting. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. What gets me is the textures of towels, and rough fabrics etc.
I had an issue with esclators when I was younger, and I still don't like them, so I understand.

Mplsgirl 10-11-2008 11:31 AM

Bearpaw, I don't like clowns either!! Or puppets. It must have come from some old sci-fi movie, or something. My big problem is bridges. They scare me to death! And when the Minneapolis bridge collapsed (where I am from), my problem went to a whole new level. I can tell you where every bridge in this town is, and we live on a river.

Yes!! Worse than puppets are the ventriloquist dummies. They're awful!!!

I saw a movie when I was little where the ventriloquist dummy came to life. Scared the bejeezus out of me!!!

Mplsgirl 10-11-2008 01:07 PM

Right! Do you remember what that movie was? I know what you're talking about! Talk about tramatization!

I actually understand this one! I feel the same, but try not to show it since everyone would think I was nuts.
But then I also have a phobia of playing pass-the-parcel, so maybe I AM nuts.

Mplsgirl 10-11-2008 01:20 PM

What is pass the parcel? And does anyone else hate to hold on to banisters in airports, etc? And I read a book by Robin Cook about a girl who spread a virus by coughing in her hand and then rubbed her hand over the elevator buttons. I think I'm turning into Howard Hughes. Yikes.

I think it was Magic. Late 70's. Don't want to think about it too much  !!!

Mplsgirl 10-11-2008 01:41 PM

I am terrified of heights and have to close my eyes when I cross over a big bridge. :|
