Your Favorite Block

I am looking to try a few new blocks. I would like for you to recommend some that are mostly 12" and not TOO many triangles. Pictures of single blocks or whole quilts is good. Thanks in advance.

http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html Try this site, they have great stuff and all free.

Boston1954 10-19-2014 03:26 PM

Thanks, June. I was actually wanting your favorites. I have seen her site, and she has a lot of wonderful choices.

Anne, I will check my block containers and see what I come up with to perhaps give you couple of different ideas :)

I like the depression block http://quilterscache.com/D/DepressionBlock.html it works well with many other blocks as an alternate block. I have used it with Road to OK and I saw one with a kaleidoscope.

Churndash is my all time fave.

Teacup 10-19-2014 05:28 PM

Ohio Star is my favorite! You can play a lot with placement of the colors /light&dark in the quarter sqare triangles and center block to get a variety of layouts with the same pieces.

MaryMo 10-19-2014 05:32 PM

I also like churndash .... it gave me a chance to practice the fast and easy half triangle square without demanding that I be precise. If it didn't come out perfectly, I made the block into an altered, wacky churndash. From that I went on to an 8-pointed star. Both gave me lots of triangle practice and remain my goto block in making scrappy quilts.

I love the look of Snail's Trail.

I adore HSTs and 8 point stars are my go-to favorite, so I'm no help!

I don't know why, but 'Jacobs ladder' has always been one of my favorite blocks. I love what you can do with a stack of them and just like making them. Pineapple blocks would be next for visual appeal ( although I dislike making them, I love them when done)

Geri B 10-20-2014 04:45 AM

...the one I am doing now......actually no favs...just enjoy cutting up fab and sewing it back together again differently! I am always looking for another, new way to do that....wonder what that means? Naw, why bother, just keep sewing....

ManiacQuilter2 10-20-2014 07:16 AM

I seem to keep making square in a square. Sometimes the center is 4", sometimes it is off center and once I made them wonky !! I also adore BQ & BQ2. They can look terrific with large prints and they go together so quickly.

SharonTheriault 10-20-2014 08:17 AM

I also like the Ohio Star, it's my fav out of the star blocks and I like star blocks.

bj 10-20-2014 12:20 PM

My go to favorite is the 8 pointed star made from hst units. It's found its way into many of my quilts. I like it expanded into a carpenter's star layout. And my second favorite is shoo fly. Two I don't care for much are Dresden plate/fan or the ones that end up looking like a swastika.

charsuewilson 10-20-2014 03:48 PM

I like moon over mountain, and a sailboat block (probably the one from quilter's cache)

Jackie Spencer 10-20-2014 04:23 PM

Log Cabin.... because it is so versatile. You can get so many different looking quilts, with the same block!!

DonnaPBradshaw 10-20-2014 04:49 PM

I love "yellow brick road" it's fast and looks great! But then I just want a fast and easy quilt most of the time.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 10-20-2014 05:24 PM

Hearts and gizzards. This link show 1 15inch block. Quilt in a Day has a free video tutorial on a 12 inch version.

I'm a star girl myself. Just about any kind of star blocks so I'm no help either. And yet I find HST's so terribly tedious but love the different ways you can make them appear.

DebbieJJ 10-21-2014 02:20 AM

Although I haven't tried one, the Dresden Plate block is one I really like. I'm working up the courage to start one. Maybe after Christmas......

I don't have any favorites, either. There are so many designs ( a lot without triangles!). It is so fun to try something different each time. So many great ideas...

I love Anita's Arrowhead. It is easy to make yet looks complicated. It is also very versatile in that you can change the size of the block rather easily by just adjusting it proportionally. I've made everything from coasters to 12" sizes with it. If you goodgle Anita's Arrowhead it is a free download. While you're at it check out other of Anita Grossman Solomon's wonderful blocks and books. She is a genius of making the complicated looking block simple to construct.

quilterpurpledog 10-21-2014 03:33 AM

One of my favorites is Jacob's ladder.

ghostrider 10-21-2014 04:46 AM

My all time favorite block is Drunkard's Path because of it's extreme versitility. You can do an entire sampler using just one simple unit in different arrangements.

From this:

you can get this:

with no triangles at all! :)
Pepper Cory has a great book on Drunkard's Path quilt designs.

Silly me but I like any block with points or curves! Just like to sew!

I don't know why, I've only made it twice but something sings to me about the simple 9 patch when combined with a snowball. I will probably make more. These I made for 2 elderly (80's) relatives in flannel with wool batting, they love them, as they feel cold a lot.

Have you checked out "Sonja's Windows" you will sew two blocks together, cut to have four! Very quick and easy! Just go to Sonja's Windows on internet and you can find instructions!

One of my favourite blocks is Log Cabin - such a versatile block. I have attached a photo of a small wall hanging I did recently. It is actually very difficult to come up with the most favourite -- there are just so many !! I do like Dresden Plate and Snail's trail as well.

GrannieAnnie 10-21-2014 10:33 AM

Annie's Choice done in just one color plus the background fabric

misseva 10-21-2014 10:46 AM

I love 4 patch blocks and guess my all time favorite is a string block because a. it uses a lot of scraps and b. I don't have to spend time cutting c. it's soooo easy.

MargeD 10-21-2014 11:08 AM

I have to say that my favorite quilt block is "Contrary Wife", it's quick, easy and whatever fabrics you choose, it always comes out great.

charlottequilts 10-21-2014 11:23 AM

I love churn dash and shoofly, but only with a straight set. On the diagonal, they remind me of a robot, somehow. (I know that makes no sense.)

Probably my favorites are Hunter Star and Jacob's ladder.

hugs,
Charlotte

Boston1954 10-21-2014 01:24 PM

Thanks so much for all of the ideas. I will be checking into these, and maybe doing a test drive on several of them.

joyce888 10-21-2014 01:40 PM

I love the "54/40 or Fight" block. I use the Deb Tucker ruler to make the peak part of the block.

My time 10-21-2014 09:46 PM

Really like the bearpaw but it does have a few HST.

I am currently using quilterscache for Biblical blocks for a quilt for my middle daughter, they have so many designs, one could get lost in them. Great site!
