Your Favorite Traditional Block
1 Attachment(s)
I love all kinds of quilts, traditional and modern, pieced and appliqued, and I know others do as well. I wonder what is your favorite block from whence quilting came. I mean the older ones, from way back before the sewing machine was even invented.
I like Bear Paw. It's fairly simple. It looks like its name. And it can be done in different layouts. Of the truly traditional blocks which one do you like best? Pictures are very welcome! I made one block as part of a sampler some years ago. |
That's an easy one for me. Churn Dash. A simple block with so many different looks.
http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...28619551_n.jpg This is my quilt from the Churn Dash Swap here on the QB. It is almost finished. I just have to finish sewing the binding on. I don't have a photo yet of the quilting. And, here is another. I am still working on all the hand embroidery's in the center. http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...g/SAM_1671.jpg And, there may be one or two more of these in my future. I just love this block. I like the colors in your sampler. I have never found the Bear Paw Block easy to put together. I struggled with seams. But, I like the block. |
Log cabin without a doubt. So many different arrangements, as well as so many variations of the block itself. My avatar is a log cabin.
Goodness, that's a really hard question! I really like the Ohio Star and the Dresden Plate.

Lovely quilts shown....
Dunstar...your avatar is amazing. Cannot believe that is a log cabin block. I like stars....all stars.....but favorite is LeMoyne star. I made this small lap with scraps to practice curved borders and FMQ.. Those are 4" star blocks in the corner... |
Ilike all of the Star Block patterns but the Ohio Star is my favorite.
My favorite is Carpenter's Wheel, and I'm flabbergasted to realize I've never made one. Might have to remedy that soon!
My favorite is a log cabin and have made several, of course non as creative as Dunster's .
Anything with flying geese... like Dutchman's puzzle.
Log cabin.
Log cabin blocks- but it’s really a tie - I Love Jacobs Ladder blocks too. :)
I like them all. Favorite changes with every new project.
Card tricks.

Not a block but a pattern. Trip Around the World. My grandmother made one for me when I was a baby.
I can't upload the picture of my most recent one for some reason. :( If this works, here's a link to it on my Pinterest account. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/493003490444607577/ |
That's a hard one. I can't choose one.
Log Cabin, Jacob's Ladder, 9 patch, Irish Chain, see what I mean ? |
The Dresden Plate, definitely the Dresden. In fact, I'm working on one right now. Will post pic when it's completed.
I love the traditional blocks. My favorites are churn dash and Ohio stars followed by baskets.
I’m glad someone else likes flying geese; I was afraid to say that, because in the local BOM/Mystery Quilts I’ve done over the last few years, there’s almost universal moaning about them! But I think they’re great.
I would have to say Double Wedding Ring and Log Cabin.
I'd say for me its the logcabin. Its come a long ways since the tradional block. Now you see it in crazy quilts, diamonds, half blocks, quarter blocks, etc. There's no end to the sizes and shapes of the tradional logcabin block.
I have so many favorites but the one block that gets me excited is the Drunken Path.
Drunkard's Path, though the only one I've made didn't have a path.
Love Monkey Wrench... which is a chunkier version of Churn Dash. Love both. Also Irish Chain.

The 8-pointed Star, a.k.a. Sawtooth Star.
I love all the stars, especially the Ohio Star as someone else mentioned. Log Cabin is my all time favorite.

Pinwheel. To me it's just so happy looking.
I seem to make Friendship Star more than any other block, although I love making Dresden Plate, too.

Are we talking to make ourselves or that we admire? I greatly admire the Double Wedding Ring but have never made one. Anything with stars take my eye, too. My "go to" is the 9 patch. Quick and easy and can be done so many ways: traditional, traditional with sashing, traditional but set on-point, Friendship Star, Irish Chain. I'm told that it was also my mother's favorite. It's attractive, versatile and easy.
Mine also is log cabin. The ones I made were wedding gifts for my children way back when. I really should make one for my use.
I really like the Grandmother's Fan. It can be embellished for a really rich look, although probably not particularly laundry-worthy. (Love crazy quilts)
My mother made Trip around the World quilts, for everyone in the family. At the time I didn't appreciate the amount of work that went into them. She stitched by hand, and this was the days before rotary cutters, so I guess each square was cut and sewn individually? She had a lot more patience than I have. |

Thank you for mentioning an Irish Chain. I have been looking for a pattern for me - what better than a Double Irish Chain? Now I'm rushing the quilt on the machine so I can start it. It will pink, yellow and white.

currently Churn Dash, before that I made tiny house madly, before that it was baskets for a few years
I would have to pick Ohio Star. So many good variations. I also love Storm at Sea, though it is not a single block.
Any star block. I am nutty for stars.
Irish chain. I've only made one, but I loved it.
Log Cabin for me, followed closely by Hunter Star.
Yolajean, your pinwheel quilt with the cats is amazing! Love it! |
All stars and pinwheels. I love them all to much to choose just one.
