Depends on my mood. If I am "done" with the quilt, I do whats easiest and call it good. If I love it I will do something different to the back.

I have used one piece backing but will now try the tube method.

Thank you for the tube method. I couldnt figure it out in my head so I took some scrap fabric 10X10 and did a practice one. What a cool method! I will be using the tube method when I dont have wide backings. It works great!

I buy something fabric called manta--it is like a heavier muslin and I sew 2 pieces together and wash fabric first when it is done spinning after the rinse I take the fabric out of the washer and twist and rubber band or small bunge cord the twisted fabric--twist till it folds into itself and die the fabric. No matter you want you can die it to match and the monta is fairly inexpensive.The fabric will look tie died. Or you can use the manta without the color it is in the light to cream field.

Whatever method uses less fabric is the one I use.

I'm intrigued by John Flynn's method - must print it out and give it a try. I usually put fabrics from the quilt top on the back. That way, all fabrics have been treated equally - washed, dried, handled - and if needed for a repair, they're ready!

If you are having the quilt finished by a Long Arm , ask the person doing the work. They can have very strong opinions , and may reject a backing that is not to their preference.

I like to use John Flynn's method of 'diagonal backing' when the fabric isn't wide enough. His printed directions aren't easy for me (duh) to understand, but I saw him demonstrate how to do it on Simply Quilts years ago, and it was easy as could be.
