I was a teenager in the 70's, kitchens were avacado. We wore bell bottoms, floppy hats, there was flower power, oranges, yellows, hot pink, hot pants, disco, hustle, John Travolta, peace signs..

I don't remember sunflowers when I was growing up in the 70's. It was colorful, bright colors, someone mentioned gold and avacado, that was kitchens.

I remember there was a craze at one time in making paper flowers from tissue paper. I made some. Big and bright as far as flowers.
If that sunflower is suppose to represent the 70's it needs some pizzaz.
Clothes did not match back then, tye dyed t shirts and either bell bottoms, elephant legs (wide bell bottoms) afro style hair, no bras..favorite expression "Peace"

Just looked in a book I have dating fabrics and the combo's were either earth tones or very Brite colors. A lot of plaids and daisies. Color wise the org and blue in the lower left of you pic and the brown and org upper right would work. Go onto ebay and search for 1970's fabric. I would attach a link but can't figure out how to do it on my iPad.

Appliqued mushrooms in atie-dyed fabric.

How about a boarder of daisys and peace signs or just a boarder of daisys.

I have pretty much decided to make a four patch border (3" finished sqs) using the fabric she sent and applique some flowered peace signs on them. That should do it! Thanks you all for your input! It was really helpful.

wow, 70's??? I'll go thru my stash to see if I can find my Starsky and Hutch fabric. LOL kidding
I have a quilt book from the late 70's and all the quilts featured in this book were very puffy and bright colors.
Many of them were large blocks too.

This is what I would do. I don't remember sunflowers, but I do remember "flower power". The colors in the FQ's are a good match with the focus. If I were doing a 70's theme, I wouldn't start with a sunflower. JMHO :?
