I would probably take the fat quarters and do a simple checkerboard round. My opinion is that color will define the time period and not the pattern. Since she sent the fat quarters then that must be the colors she identifies with the 70's. My personal rule in doing round robins is to make it simple. Let the next person be fancy.

Going by a tied quilt my granny made, it was wild designs in bright colors. The material she used has bright pinks, burgundy and a little yellow swirling around all over. She made this about 1977. Kind of like paisley swirl but not paisley pattern if that makes any sense.

I think those FQs look more like "mod" style fabrics than the true 70s. It's fairly popular with the younger-than-the-ones-who-lived-in-the-70s crowd. :)

That's the last time I was skinny.

The quilt revival started in the 70's. It wasn't like now. We did it like people did years ago because that is all we knew at first. Cardboard patterns and cut and sewed each little piece one at a time. Mostly by hand at first. Then some of you bright educated girls came on the scene and figured out all these neat ways to do things both easier and faster. I don't know why anyone every quilted years ago. I guess because there was no tv and most didn't have money for books and others things of interest.

My memory of that era: Lots of circular designs in Autumn tones, paisley and sort of "Flower Power" stuff e.g.a big, five petal flower shape with another big circle in the middle of that, to represent the centre of the flower. They were usually very bright hot pink on black or orange on green, yellow on purple - discordant colours.
(Just had a look at jkwynn's post and I would say that those mod fabrics represented there are what I remember).

I was in high school and college in the 70's. Peace signs, big flowers and tie dyed everything (including our bed sheets)!

I remember sunflowers being popular in late 80's

My kitchen was from the 70's with turquoise, orange, yellow and white. I even had a turquoise sink, rangetop, and oven front.
I hate to burst anyone's bubble but I sure hope I'm not going to get that quilt with those sunflowers. (And I'm a Kansan.)
