I found the magazine with the project that I remembered. It was the Family Circle from February, 1977. The method was the same as in the video mentioned above. They called it "biscuit tufting" Their bed sized version, 108 1/2" square, used an incredible amount of yardage, including 4 yards for a wide ruffle on three sides. I'm sure it would have weighed a ton, but it looked charming.
