I've never made a medallion quilt but I am designing one for my DH. Because I want it to be very large, I'm concerned that I won't be able to quilt it on my DSM, so I was considering a QAYG, which I have also never tried. I'm looking for thoughts from those who are familiar with the technique of QAYG on how they think it would work out for a medallion quilt. Any advice will be welcome.

The medallion should be able to be QAYG on your DSM. Then the additional borders/sections can be added and QAYG. Just do the quilt in sections.

I think a medallion quilt is the perfect candidate for QAYG. Piece the center, and add borders till it's a size that you feel comfortable with quilting on your machine. Then add borders using a QAYG technique. Remember, GAYG is a blanket term for many different techniques. I'd also suggest investing in Marti Michell's book "Machine Quilting in Sections:

Thank you for the suggestions. I have added that book to my wishlist. The quilt is mostly just a concept right now, as I am waiting on DH to enlarge the applique pattern for the center of the quilt.

Ann Peterson has a really good craftsy class on quilting big quilts on a DSM. One of her ideas is to split the batting. The whole quilt top is assembled and the center section quilted first. I really liked that idea because it does not require the strips to cover the joins like the qayg methods I have seen.
