    If the batting suggestion is 6" apart, why not try that width first and see how it feels. You may then decide to quilt on the opposite diagonal, in a grid, as too much in one direction will cause the square to warp. Then if that doesn't seem enough, add rows at 3" and see how that looks. At least you won't have to unpick if you think the rows are too close.

    Thanks, all! I'm going to use several of these suggestions. I hadn't even thought about distorting the shape of the quilt.

    Have just recently quilted two quilts, primarily on diagonal. No distortion. Was using poly batting, so maybe that makes a difference?
