I have made many quilts with black as a main color..black is like any other color when it comes to having lint and piles on it..the better the material. ..the less change of the piling..I always wash all my quilts in cold water with white vinegar the first time..it sets the colors ..after going that..none have ever bleed..the black won't wash out any faster than the other colors in the sun..u just notice it more..being in the sun is not good for any color..the material in time becomes weak..black is a great accent color..I think u will enjoy it ..if u put your worries over the color away..treat it like any other color..great quilt pattern..it will beautiful...

Beautiful quilt. I just washed some Kona black yesterday and soaked it first in the sink to see if it released any dye. I was pleasantly surprised that the water showed absolutely no sign of any dye being released.

That is a thing of beauty. She will be so delighted.

Making a black (mostly) quilt is one time I absolutely use Kona. Have not had negative results.

I have made quilts with black solids and I did pre-wash the fabric, something I do 99% of the time and it did not face with time. Quilts made with black, especially with bright colors make a gorgeous quilt, in my opinion.

It should be fine. It looks great! Wash it once before giving it to her, using color catchers. Just tell her to wash in cool water and dry cool.

Are they batiks or regular cottons? I can't tell from the angle.

Gorgeous quilt and you've gotten great suggestions and advice. I agree with not using black for piecing, at least in the bobbin. I use navy or dark grey so I can see to unsew if necessary.

The black is beautiful in that quilt. It may fade some, but so do all colors, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Have you considered using dark gray instead of black? That might look nice and be more forgiving than black.
