I got my youngest a Janome Sew Mini for Christmas yesterday. Now, I want to put together a few pre-cut quilt kits and find a book for her. Any ideas?

Those are two that I've really enjoyed. The big book of quilting is 4 books into one book. I got mine used at amazon for about 7$ including shipping. Very informative book. The other one has different blocks the names and directions sort of on how to make them.
Maybe have a four patch as a starter?

I found a couple of great books for kids to start machine sewing. I'll also get her a starter sewing kit. I think what I'm going to do is create a BOM set for her so she can work on one block a month, then this summer we can put together what she'll have done. I have her on holidays and summer since she goes to school in Denton where her dad lives. It was so hard to get used to that but the schools here are not good, violent even, and the national testing index shows that the schools here are falling way below average. The school she goes to there is one of the best in TX so the arrangement is worth her being safe and getting a better quality education. I miss her like crazy during the school year though!

Rag time quilts are great for beginners because you don't have to be so exact with the seam allowances. But you still learn about matching up seams and so forth. There is also practice sewing straight lines when you sew the X in the block. The cutting is also easy - you could cut the long strips for her and she could cut the squares from the strips.

I found that a walking foot makes putting the rows together much easier. Will her new machine take a walking foot?

How about one of the Turning Twenty books or the Yellow Brick road. Both are based on squares and would not be too hard.

I really like Books #2 and #3 in Ursula Reikes Quilting for Babies series (#2 - More Quilts for Baby: Easy As ABC and #3 -Even More Quilts for Baby: Easy As ABC). I use these patterns for baby quilts but also alot with non-baby but fun theme fabric for the kids, and even adults in my life -- I just use more squares to make the quilts bigger. Most of patterns are strip patterns of some type making them easy and fast.

I like the BOM idea! How about a 4-patch, a rail fence, a 9-patch & a friendship star for 4 of them? All are fairly simple and with the friendship star you only have to match the triangles to squares. :D My 2 cents. :wink:
