Whenever I add borders to quilt as you go, I cut a batting piece the exact size that I need. I will sew the border fabric to the back first, don't flip the back border, leave it closed. Flip the quilt, place the batting, sew the front border, then smooth it together and trim. Some try to do both borders at the same time. I'm not that coordinated.

I cut all border sides at least 2" longer than needed, lay and sew them on 2 sides, then lay and sew them on the other sides. Then I never have to worry about precise measurements. Use the cut off end for ?what do you call them? "beginners and enders" for sewing other quilts. No waste and no fret!!
