Good morning everyone! I hope everyone had a good week and has a better weekend! And, if you didn't I certainly hope it gets better for you!

I have a guestion on cutting from strips. I am still rather new to quilting and I am following an actual pattern for the first time. That pattern calls for cutting my squares and triangles from a strip. Do they mean a strip from the width of the fabric or from the lenght? Or does it even matter? I will need to cut different pieces from the same piece of fabric in different sizes. So I want to be sure I don't cut in a direction that will use more of the fabric than I should.

Most patterns are written with the fabric being cut the width.

often, the directions will include something to the effect of "wof" which means width of fabric.

I always cut by the width...Good luck and keep us up to date on your progress, with pics!! Any more questions, just ask..the greatest people hang here!!

WOF is selvage to selvage

most pieces are cut wof....but many times it is suggested that borders be cut from lengthwise-parallel to selvage. I personally do not cut borders from lengthwise, I just carefully sew from wof pieces, but measuring and marking center, ends so I don't end up with wavy borders.

I too cut my borders from wof, every time I've done it lengthwise, I have ended up with some wavy borders. I don't seem to have a problem doing wof.
