Thanks, I think i understand-it's kind of like strip quilting with the batting and backing. The key is to have extra backing in order to turn it under and stitch it close. It will look rather blocky on the back, and not the cool design i usually get when I bring it to my friend with the quilting machine. Thanks gals!! (and what does DH mean???)

You can, it's called Appliquilt. If you want raw edge applique you can just use your straight stitch as close to the edge of the appliquéd piece. I prefer doing it with the buttonhole stitch, but it doesn't look quite as nice from the back.
