Thanks, I think i understand-it's kind of like strip quilting with the batting and backing. The key is to have extra backing in order to turn it under and stitch it close. It will look rather blocky on the back, and not the cool design i usually get when I bring it to my friend with the quilting machine. Thanks gals!! (and what does DH mean???)

You can...in fact Pam Clarke is an expert machine quilter and she prefers to quilt her tops first and then put the applique's on.
