What are these used for? I have a few of my Grandmothers but she hand quilted.

They were used to mark patterns to hand quilt either ON the blocks or between them, and on borders.

You can use stencils for machine quilting, too.

Yes FM. That is what I do makes it a lot easier. you use a sewing pen that will erase after you go over it.

Yes FM. That is what I do makes it a lot easier. you use a sewing pen that will erase after you go over it.
Thank You. I asked this question a couple of days ago but I do not think anyone understood my question. I cannot draw but see all these beautiful patterns on stencils. I want to learn FM so will get some stencils and start out. I am going to make my DGD some burp cloths and thought that would be a good project to practice on.

I have used stenciles and stencil paints to put pictures on my fabric either before or after making the quilt.
I did this when I made jeans quilts (out of old jeans)
Now if I knew how to put a pix on here I would show you one I did.

I use stencils a lot for FMQ and do some doodling (meandering) in between sometimes. I love the look and they sell a lot of them now and I've seen demonstrations on quilt shows using them for FMQ also.

I did it, got the pix up. This quilt top is made of old jeans ,or denim wt. material. I stenciled it to add a 'lil color. It was my gr daus first quilt, made by me.

I use them all the time with my HQ, I use pounce and then quilt FM, cheating some would say, but I am happy with them.
