Mine have been used and laundered over & over- some are travel/ drag around blankies- forts, floor tummy times...all used. I do not satin stitch ( not a fan of the stiff, hard finish of it) I use a small zigzag or more often a blanket stitch on my appliqués.

I have made only a couple raw edge applique quilts. One I did see years later and the applique was coming loose in one area I took it home with me and mended it. Not a big deal. The quilt was the "blankie" and was much loved so it was serving the purpose that it was intended for. It was one that got smaller over the years.

I do raw edge applique on baby quilts all the time. And also need to wash the quilts often, sometimes several times a month! I have NEVER had any problems, with either loose threads or appliques coming loose. I do a tight zigzag or satin stitch. I use Heat'n'Bond lite, but wouldn't hesitant to use steam a seam lite too.
