I made a really nice large receiving blanket useing two different flannels sewn right sides together then turned right sides out. When I was done I did a cute decorative stitch around the entire blanked. It turned out so cute. I'm including a link to Connecting Threads where the pattern was under their freebies list. I modified it to fit my needs and skill.
Hope it helps.

I also stitch a square in the center. The 2 layers tend to separate over time and this square helps elimInate that.
