Post Help finishing Tshirt rag quilt

I am making a T shirt Rag quilt for my DGS graduation and have little quilting experience. I have the shirts ready and also did some pictures. His school colors are Maroon and Silver. Most of the shirts are gray, so I did black sashing and I'm thinking a marbled maroon back. I want to make it a rag quilt, so my first question is I saw several posts saying use flannel, but will regular cotton fabric rag OK? Next I like the rag look for the back, but not the edges. I know there are no rules, but will it look ok if I put binding on a rag quilt, I'm thinking of using the same maroon as the back. Opinions? Also, am I right that the seams for the rag should be 1/2 " ?

Absolutely 100% cotton will rag up. I made a rag quilt with flannel on the back and 100% cotton on the front and it came out just fine!

Not sure I would try to make a rag quilt with T-shirts.

Guess I didn't mention, I was going to "frame" the Tshirts with the black sashing and that's what would be in the seam to rag. Will that work?
Thank you

Is there a reason, other than they don't rag - I'm adding sashing around them for that.

Yes, the knit of the Tshirts would unravel first before they would rag.

I have made several rag quilts. Some I have finished by adding binding and some I have "ragged" the edges. Both ways work!

Never tried cotton for the "raggy" sashing, but if I wash fabric before piecing it sure shreds so I guess it would work.

I think that since you are using the cotton black sashing for the ragging, it should work fine. Post a pic when done so we can see.

Thanks for all your comments. I'll try to post a picture when I get far enough along and when done.
