If you have a machine that you are able to move the needle position and 3.5 is your 1/4 inch position what position do you set needle for scant 1/4 inch?

On my Bernina the 1/4 piecing foot gives me a perfect 1/4 and if I want scant, I move it one click to the right.

That is a good question...I am only quessing...but probably the next number to the left...my machine is computerized and it would be -.25mm. The best thing to do is try it and see if it gets you what you need.

It will depend on the fabric and thread you're using. It's good to make
a test every time you start a new project. I keep a note of my settings
for reference. Here's a video on how to test your 1/4 inch.

Make a sampler to stitch the different widths of your machine setting. Mark the settings by each seam line so you have them for later reference. I keep them in a notebook with the machine manual.

Mine is generally the same as Tartan - one click to the right. But sometimes it takes two clicks to the right.

I use one of two straight stitch only machine and can't move the needle. I use a 1/4" foot and use the edge of it. I usually just use a 1/4" since I don't always use a pattern.

I know that my friends with screens on their machine s have tested theirs to something like 5.23 - that's not the actual number, but they have it all worked out. I know that I have to check out piecing on each new pattern to see what the designer means.

I always check before starting a new project. But likely 1 or 2 clicks to the right.
