Just was thinking ... what about a flange border on each of your blocks of 36 to help frame them up? Then your sashing with the 4-patch cornerstones?
If you're not wanting to do anymore small square work, then take what you have and draft it up on graph paper to see what you can do to bring it to the size you want via your sashing and borders.

thanks for all the suggestions. I just saw a picture of a pattern in connecting threads that I am going to copy. The pattern shows a border around each square and then three strips around that. I plan to use a nice green around the squares and start from there....This will make the squares larger and going to use up the strips and make more squares as I don't think there is enough to use for sashing. Don't want to run out. so back to making more squares.
