I like the 9 patch version of this pattern a lot because of its simplicity and the number of ways you can arrange the final blocks. I have not done the D4.

I’ve looked at a number of ideas on Pinterest and they all seem to use 2 patterned and 2 plain squares.

I have a pile of random 5 inch squares, mostly patterned, left over from other projects that I would like to use up. Is it necessary to use plain squares too? Will the blocks still ‘work’ if they are made from 4 different patterned squares?

I do have some plain fat quarters in a selection of colours that I could use but would it look odd to have different colours?

Would love some advice here from experienced disappearing block makers!
different colors would not look strange - it would just add to the scrappy look. As some else has said, using similar patterns/colors would provide less contrast but would add to the scrappiness of the final quilt. try it with one block and if you don't like it, try something else and use the one block for a miniature quilt...for a beanie baby or other small creature.

I have made the D9P many times and as others have said I prefer it for the many different layouts and looks you can get with it. I will show photos of 3 very different looks I have made; all the same pattern, just different fabrics and layouts.

Wildyard-Love all of your D9p quilts. I especially like the pink and purple one but all are so pretty and it is amazing how different they all look with different fabrics and different layouts with same pattern.

Many thanks for all your really helpful suggestions. I loved seeing your photos - they’re an inspiration.

I hope to get started on this project in a week or so. No doubt I’ll be back asking for more help!
