I can't take a class nor do I have anyone helping me. I was wondering for those of you who have used a book to teach yourself some quilting technique etc, which book or DVD did you use? If there are any video online, I'd love to see them as well.

Thank you

When I started I bought "quilting for dummies". It was OK and got me started. Some of my best advice has been here. It's not always a question I asked, but an answer to someone else's question.

i prefer book and dvds. i also have some dvds of workshops that quilt artists have released.

if you're just starting out the library typically has some good beginner books that you could borrow.

if you go to the cotton club website or the equilter website you'll find many dvds on different quilting subjects. you could check out what they have and then search the internet for the best price.

I started out with books from the library. If your library doesn't have much you can request them to purchase quilting books and DVDs (probably need to be specific with your requests), or ask about inter-library loan.

http://www.smartflix.com rents DVDs on many subjects, including quilting. I haven't seen their DVDs, and the rentals are a little on the pricey side IMO; however, it would be a lot less expensive than purchasing a lot of DVDs.

Eleanor Burns "Quilt in a Day" books and DVDs are popular with beginning quilters. You might be able to find some of them on eBay or Amazon used.

Free videos are at:

I found Eleanor Burns to be the best for books and dvd and video.
She has her basic videos at her web site. http://quiltinaday.com

You can google quilting videos and find many out there that are free. Your local library may also have quilting videos, our library system has many videos and books, I go online to reserve/request the ones of interest or that I have seen advertised elsewhere.

Thank you for the suggestions so far. Keep 'em coming!!! :)

Yes, I do use the library and WorldCat for interlibrary loans. Problem with vido is that I can only get loans in my own state and buying them is not an option.

I'm on a shoestring budget right now if I'm to get a sewing machine so I can quilt. :)
