I have a threader on my Janome machine which works beautifully so I have no problem but, have you tried wetting the eye of the needle rather than the thread end - it might sound strange, but this works much better!

I also wear no-line bifocals & have taken to wearing a pair of clip-on magnifier glasses over my regular ones to thread needles & do close work. Works great for me! I got them on-line from Jo-Anns. Pricey, but I'd buy again with all the help they've been for me! They were $17.00 with shipping.
