Of all the yrs that I have been quilting. I finally have a ? on a spool of thread I grabbed when at JoAnns. This is the thread I bought by mistake. Ammann group mettler -Art 9104-silk finish cotton. 100% cotton merc. No. 50. Is this a reg thread for sewing. I've been useing it for sewing. Is it ok to wind on a bobbin. I've been sewing with it. But the No. 50 is throwing my mind off a little. Don-isewman

I have heard of it and saw a video of a gal who preferred it. She said it was stronger than 100% cotton because it didn't break as quick. Lasted longer. I don't have any and have never used any,, I have just always used C&C.

50wt is the standard weight thread for piecing. Mettler is a 2-ply thread, meaning it will be even thinner than the more common 3-ply thread (although rumor has it that all manufacturers are heading toward 2-ply thread eventually). It is also used for quilting -- though many quilters prefer 40wt as it will show up more & therefore feature the quilting design better. Thread weights are opposite of human weights. The smaller the number, the fatter the thread. So 100wt is the thinnest & 12wt is the fattest.

Mercerized thread just means that some of the fuzzies have been burned off the thread. It's better for your machine. "Silk finish" is the chemical finish they use to make it a bit shinier. There is no silk in the thread.

It's good thread for piecing and for bobbins. I like trying new threads. My new favorite right now is Missouri Star Quilt Company brand. I have a new favorite every few months. I try them all so when one type is found on a good sale I know if I should buy or say no thanks.

Good Morning Don. I know that Mettler makes a variety of thread. I am looking at a 547 yards of Mettler silk-finish thread but the Art should be 104 and the the next number is the color. On the bottom size, it says No 50 which is the weight. JAF use to sell this thread online only and they stopped selling it over a year ago. So I am surprised that your local JAF is selling it. I have used this thread exclusively since the early 90s when I was told that is the thread I should use on my Bernina 1530.

Metler Silk Finish is my favorite thread. But I didn't realize it was only 2 ply. I've decided that I like Metler better than Aurafil because the Aurafil seems to break easier.
