I have a Janome 15000 and downloaded the "My 15000" ap on the iPAD that is a video reference for the machine. While watching it, I found out that the U26 (straight) and u27 (zig zag) actually sew backwards!!!!

I've never heard of this and I'm super excited for some straight line quilting work I need to do around a New York Beauty type star.

Do other machines do this?

Very old vintage machines could do only straight stitch forward. I think all machines after that have had a "reverse" option that allows you to change direction. As far as I know, reverse works on all stitches; however, the walking foot on some machines do not handle stitching in reverse so you need to be careful about that.

I'm not quite sure how you would use reverse stitching on a New York beauty. It's difficult to see where you are going when stitching in reverse.

I agree. Most DSM have the reverse option but I am not sure it stays that way without holding the reverse button on my Bernina 1530.

Gee, I thought all machines sewed backwards. Some have a button that you have to hold down, others have a button that you only have to push once.

Even treadle sews backwards from what I can remember sewing on one. I don't think it's recommended to sew backwards for more then a dozen stitches on any machine using the reverse setting.

Ah! I do remember the Singer Featherweight had a way to change the stitch to reverse - I had forgotten about that. Great memory.

This machine has a stitch that sews backwards without having to hold a button (as my last 4 sewing machines do). I will be testing this with a clearfoot that has guidelines on it.

I had my 15 clone for 20 years before i found out it had a backstitch!!. I was 8 when I got it.

Can someone enlighten me as to what the benefits are of stitching backwards for more than just a few stitches?

I don't think she is talking about the back stitch , at least that's what I got from it . My Brother can sew at an angle if I use that button on the machine.

When I first looked at it, I thought you were going to say it only sews backward. My friends machine got stuck in reverse and she had to get the quilt finished so she just turned the machine around and sewed from the back. Voila! Sewing forward again. Necessity is the motherhood of invention. Mine sews backward too. Even if I use the zigzag. Or hem stitch. Or any of them.
