My husband and I were at an antique mall in town today and saw a Featherweight for sale for $275. It doesn't have a case but looks really in really good shape and it says it works. He talked them down to $225. Should we go back down tomorrow and buy it?

I would take some fabric scraps & thread & ask if you can see if it works o.k. and if it does, I would grab it.

Yes, you need to make sure it has a bobbin case in it - they are quite expensive to replace. When I got mine on ebay it came without one, and I queried this because the seller had said it worked well - I maintained that it couldn't work at all without the bobbin case, so in the end, he sent me one.

I think non sewers often say they work when in actual fact, the motor might go, and make the needle go up and down - that doesn't mean they stitch.

...and for a case, if you can't find one, get a bowling ball bag and take the wire rack out of it. The FW fits perfectly and is easy to carry and not expensive if you look at a thrift shop or Goodwill or Salvation Army store,

I would get it, if you test it and it works...I have seen new reproduction cases on ebay for $50.00 - $60.00...

Check it out. I do think that the price is a bit high without the carry case. My opinion ...
