Default Should I use batting in a baby quilt?

I am making a baby quilt for a baby shower in December. The couple lives in South Miami. I have purchased cotton fabric for the top and flannel for the back. I also purchased batting, but I don't know if that will make the quilt to warm for the baby.

Any suggestions?

I would use cotton or bamboo batting. Lots of baby quilts get used as floor mats the baby lays on top of not to cover up with. You could also make some burp cloths our of the same fabric if you have leftovers.

Yes, I would use batting too. But I don't think I would use flannelette for the backing--just cotton. Many new parents do not realized that a house temperature that is comfortable for them, is too cool for baby. Use the flannelette for one or two receiving blankets. I wash and dry the flannelette first and then square it up.

I use Hobbs 80/20. Sometimes quilts are used for them to lay on outside the crib.

I have recently read safety recommendations for babies, and they include no blanket on top of them. Instead quilts are used for "tummy time" or for décor. So, I put batting in all of my baby quilts and am then proud of the way they drape and provide a cushion for the baby on the floor.

I've only been to Miami once and it was cold and windy I would put batting in the quilt, as others have mentioned, it can be used inside or outside the crib.

I have already purchased the flannel for the backing. I'll have to use that and hope for the best!!! 😀

Another option would be to use the flannel that you already bought for batting and get some cotton for the back.
