I've been sewing lots of what I call Zipper quilts for my guild's kids' charities. The pattern is super simple and goes together quickly. Each "block" is made using a single jelly roll strip. It's a great pattern if you and your friend make the blocks independently because you can later pool your finished blocks and lay them out to get the look you want. I think it makes a cute quilt too.
- Cut each jelly roll strip into 2.5" x 8.5" pieces.
- Cut a 2.5" square of black fabric.
- Sew the 2.5" black square to one of the 8.5" pieces.
- Alternate the black side of the strip to get a "zipper" effect (refer to attached photo)

I think this might be the Mary Quilts you mentioned?

Yes, indeed, there looks like some quick and easy quilts ... that become pretty snazzy looking once finished!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful suggestions! I am going to print off many of them and put them in a binder for easy reference.
I love the Carpenter's star quilt in particular and there are some videos out there on making this quilt...I like the idea of splitting the star so you have half peeking into one side of the quilt and half the other.

I was thinking it'd be great for a large tote bag. Or a table runner.

After finding this one, I reread your post, sorry, no blocks, just strips, but there are other things on that blog, all quite modern.

Or perhaps this setting You just put the darker corners using a 2 1/2" square you mark corner to corner and cut off to make triangle corners. The alternating blocks are just nine patches. Which you strip sew and piece together Just make sure to use a background color that coordinates with the background of the print you use in the print blocks. It all goes together looking pretty interesting.
