Thread: The Singer 40K saga continues...

    The 40K I found on ebay for DD4 arrived today.

    I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.
    No word yet from the seller.

    Please notice that although the machine itself was wrapped a layer of bubble wrap inside its case, the case itself was "cushioned" by only a handful of plastic grocery sacks.

    1950's plastic is not the most pliable out there.
    HELLO.. brittle anyone?
    I'm just a tad bit annoyed. :thumbdown:

    Oh my goodness, that is terrible, so sorry that has happened to you. I had the same thing with something I bought that arrived in 100 broken pieces and luckily the seller refunded my money but it was nothing so precious as this gorgeous machine. I hope they come to the party and you find another another one, I would be heartbroken and very annoyed.

    It only just arrived this afternoon..
    I'll give them until tomorrow to respond.

    I don't want to be a witch (nicely put) about this..
    all I'm asking for is for them to make it right.

    The collectable aspect of the machine is greatly reduced, in my opinion by having a destroyed case.

    I'd like a refund and paid return postage to return it to them.
    Their choice.
    Not too much IMHO to ask.

    Yup, same thing happened to me on a Singer 99 from E-Bay. I was refunded by the seller. Then I got a Featherweight which I really wanted anyway for a few $ more. No case, but my husband can make me one to tote it!

    Awful, if you don't hear from the seller by tomorrow, late tomorrow afternoon, I would send another email to the seller telling him/her that unless you hear from him within 24 hours, you are filing a claim with eBay. Sometimes things happen with people and they can't check their emails; on the other hand, in this tech age, there's really no excuse...at least within 2 days.

    Did you pay with PayPal? Isn't there a method that you can reclaim your funds????

    I remember when you posted the first pics of this cute little machine!!

    Oh no! I would be so upset!!! I bought 2 machines from Ebay and was very lucky with them. Both sellers packed the machines so well they could have survived just about anything. I hope the seller will make things right for you.

    was the package marked FRAGILE by the company that delivered it? They are the ones who should be paying for the damage....
    It should have been insured. And it should have been properly packed...
    Contact both the seller and the mode of delivery company as well as e-bay

    USPS - Parcel Post
    No writing or markings on the package.
    No mention of insurance on the label, only a tracking number.
    The postage was purchased and printed online with ebay's logo on it.

    Something tells me that USPS isn't going to care one way or the other about the condition of the package if insurance wasn't purchased.
    There was no option to insure the package in the auction.

    Hopefully I won't be SOL. :(

    You should be able to resolve this thru the seller or eBay. I've had good luck resolving issues, though not as bad as your issue. Here are the instructions to follow:

    Delivery companies do not mark, nor look for marks on packages.

    Insurance only works if the item is properly packaged, which this wasn't. Sometimes, though they do accept claims for badly packed items, but many are denyed for just such a reason.



    So sorry your new baby was badly beaten on the way to your home.

    This was the response I got from the seller:

    If box was crushed you should not have opened it.Take it to post office and see what they can do.Get back with me about the post office option.Sorry about problem
    This is my response to the seller:

    I truly had hopes that there was no damage to the machine or case as I had thought the case itself would have been packaged a bit more securely. (bubble wrapped?)
    I took the package to the Spring, TX Panther Creek Post Office this morning.
    After explaining that the package had been left on our doorstep in this condition, I was told that the package had been marked "Delivered" and as insurance was not purchased, there is nothing the Post Office would do.
    There was no option in the auction to purchase insurance.

    Would you like me to send pictures of the damages? Although the case is destroyed, the machine appears to be okay. I have not tried to operate it.
    I bought this with the intention of teaching my 4 year old daughter to sew - I'm a quilter and she wants to do as Mommy does!

    As I've mentioned before, in my 10 years as a member of ebay, I've never had to deal with an item that was damaged in shipping.
    (I've even purchased a car and had it transport shipped to me!)

    One of these options would be acceptable to me:

    1) Reimbursement of the original transaction ($27.05) PLUS return shipping of the item back to you ($10.80)
    Seller to reimburse: $37.85
    This does not include the $10.80 already spent with USPS to mail it here.

    2) Reimbursement of the item only, I keep the machine with the destroyed case.
    Seller to reimburse: $16.25

    Please let me know which option is acceptable to you.

    I've not opened an ebay case.
    According to ebay's site, I should try to resolve it with the seller first.
    I'm giving an opportunity.. Resolution Center is the next step.

    I think I was reasonable in the options I presented.
    What do you think?

    It doesn't matter whether you purchased insurance or not - the seller must make good on the item that you purchased. eBay will side with you even if you were offered insurance and declined to purchase it.

    That was very poor packing. :( How sad that such a cute little thing was destroyed like that. I'm glad it wasn't a really valuable sewing machine - heaven knows what kind of damage they could have done with that. :(

    I would have requested my full purchase price and shipping costs (both ways) refunded...you should not have to be out one penny.

    I agree. You did not pack it, so you should not be out one single penny. Honestly, plastic bags for padding?

    I shipped a Pfaff machine once...I had that thing padded inside the case outside the case and added more even once I thought it was good enough...I paid insurance on it even though the customer didn't ask for it (to save myself in case something happened).

    Any good seller should want to ensure the delivery arrives safely...just arriving is not good enough...it's got to arrive intact.

    By purchasing this item, in essence I agreed to his policy.

    He has offered to refund me $8.00.

    I'm over it.

    File your claim thru ebay and/or paypal and request the full amount...don't give up that easy...

    AND DON"T AGREE TO HIS OFFER...OTHERWISE you can't file a claim

    I agree. I believe you should let ebay/paypal know of the circumstances and the sellers response. You should not have to pay for this mess, and disappointment. Good Luck.

    I had already accepted it when I posted.

    Lesson learned.
    ALWAYS ASK for insurance!

    The way I figure it.. I paid $8.25 for the machine itself.
    Either way, I'd have had to pay for shipping.

    DD4 will enjoy the machine just as much with or without a case. :)
