You can get them at Lands End. Their website is:
http://www.landsend.com
They may be more expensive, but I personally like how they feel.

You can also get their sheets at some SEARS stores.

Our local Walmart has them...and Anna's Linens has them as well....check your area for discount linen stores like Anna's...I have found wonderful ones there.

I have heard this too. If I remember right, it is because the fabric is too finely woven to easily hand quilt. As far as machine quilting, I would use a larger size needle. I find when I mend my sheets for the dogs, the needle sometimes has trouble penetrating the fabric, have to use a sharp new needle. And I would certainly wash the sheet a couple times to soften it up before I used it for backing.

Penney's and Macy's still had them last month. They are a bit pricier than Walmart.

I resorted to searching EBay. ie. I need extra long singles . Locally they sell out for college dorm beds and are seldom reordered. Watch the thread counts and shipping costs for the bestbuys.

Target has nice 100% cotton single sheets and they go on sale quite often. In our Targets, the single sheets are not in an aisle, they are along the back wall where the aisles of sheets sets are.

I have also used the fitted sheets for backings - just cut off the elastic and square it up. I have also used the fitted sheets for pajamas. No reason you can't use them if the price is right!

If using sheets for the backing is good enough for all of you (whom I have learned soooooo much from), I'll look harder. Any special count?

Bed, Bath and Beyond is one place that sells single flat sheets. Not cheap, but you can find only a flat sheet there.
