    Default Size of House Block?

I would like to try making one of those quilts that feature rows of houses.

I can find lots of pictures, especially on Pinterest, but no details of the actual block size.

The house I want to try is a very basic one - just two ‘walls’ either side of a ‘door’ and a triangle for the roof. Each house would join onto its neighbour. I would like to use up a pile of left over jelly roll pieces.

Is it just a case of playing around with the fabric until I get something I like or could some kind-hearted person give me some guidance.

    thank you.

If you want to use jelly roll pieces, I would make the sides and the door from 2.5" strips, with the lintel about 2" tall. You would get a block that is 6.5" across, so for the roof, I would make a 3.5 X 6.5 (finished 3X6) flying geese unit. You will have to experiment a bit with the height, but looking at this example, I would go with 5"

I used 3" (finished) houses in a recent quilt - found a tutorial for them on Pinterest. Enter "QM Bitty Blocks" into the search slot. You'll find not only 3" houses, but 3" stars and trees as well.
