Question 12" finished disappearing 9 patch

To cut a disappearing 9 patch {finished size 12"}would you cut the center 2" from each side of original 4 patch? Hope you understand my "clear as mud" request.

When doing my D9P after making the block, I measured the center section/blocks and cut down the middle. You then turn the board if you can and cut down the middle of the others to form a four patch out of your oringinal 9P block. If your finished center blocks ended up exactly 4 inches sewn, then cutting at 2 inches would be correct. Since very little I sew comes out exact, I just center my cuts. A clear as mud answer right?

You can't get 12" finished without either starting with very odd measurements or trimming a larger one down to 12". Here's a chart to help you.

Assuming your patches were cut at 4.5" and sewn together to make a 12.5" unfinished 9 patch, you would cut through the center blocks at 2" or measuring from the outside edge of the block to the center--it would be 6.25 inches. Clear as mud?
