I have purchased some 108" fabric to use for backing from Marshall Dry Goods. As it is a cheaper fabric cost wise, the hand lacks softness of the higher quality fabrics (understandably). I would like to know your experience on using these fabrics, and if after washing they soften up enough to feel ok on your skin. Same with the 108" batik backings. Can you comment on how they are holding up for you over time? .

I've never had a problem with stiffness on their 108" backs, and have bought at least 4 bolts of their backings, so I'm no help, but, maybe someone will be able to help you.

I always prewash my wide backings adding some vinegar to the wash ( and detergent) the vinegar is a natural fabric softener. I automatically do this with all wide backs, whether batiks, stiff, soft or whatever mainly because the wide fabrics tend to have pretty deep creases in them from the way they are folded and rolled onto the bolts. I take them out of the dryer when just barely dry and drape them over my frame- then I never have to deal with trying to iron them before use.

I used some of their wide backing that was pretty stiff when I got it, but it softened up and was fine after I put it through a regular wash cycle.

I never buy fabric over the internet. I did once so I don't anymore.

I buy wide backings locally. Wash and dry them as I do all fabrics before I use them.
