It was called Argo Starch. They still make it. My mother made it in two strengths. One for dresses & shirts and one undiluted for Daddy's collars & cuffs. I have some now but you can buy Sta-Flo starch by the quart for very little and that's what I use. It can be used full strength or diluted. I never starch my material until I'm putting it in a quilt top and then it's washed out.

I believe on this board someone shared Quilters Monnshine. Which is a substitute for Best Press... I made it and I really like it...mix well....1 gal distiller water. 1/2 cup liquid starch (sta flo) and 1cup cheap vodka. You can also add 4 tsp essential oil for smell. I added a dab that goes into my vacuum ....don't know if that was right or wrong? But I have been pressing muslin with it and really like it....I don't know who posted this and hope they don't mind me sharing with you...
