I am making my first strip quilt. It is for a baby - about 40 inches square. My plan is to ditch it and then run a design down the center of each strip. The batting is Warm and Natural. Does it have to have some horizontal lines, or will stand up to the washer abd dryer quilted this way?

warm & natural states you can quilt up to 10" between quilting lines- which means there should be a line of quilting at least every 10"- in all directions. if you simply have 'channels' in one direction the batting can separate- leaving bare areas and then 'balls' of batting- especially in a quilt that will be laundered often (like a baby/kids quilt)

Since baby quilts are washed often, I usually do a meander so that the batting is caught every couple of inches in each direction. With the strip quilts I've done, the fabric has been heavily patterned, so meander quilting seems to fit.

if your strips are jelly roll width, going down each one should suffice.

I would suggest going sewing lines across the strips because it could fall apart. especially if it is a baby quilt that will be washed every few days if it is used a lot. I used mine a tone for both kids.

I have made my first strip quilt with 3 inch strips. It measures about 40x40 inches. I plan to ditch it, then quilt a design down the center of each strip - no horizontal quilting. Will it be durable quilted this way? Thanks for your comments.

It should be very durable, no matter what batting you used. I don't think that there is a batting that requires quilting to be closer than 3". You might want to consider quilting vertically in every OTHER row, or risk flattening the quilt to a very thin one.

I've made kid's strip quilt with 5" wide strips and just sewed each strip at the top so my horizontal stitching lines were 5" apart all the way down the quilt...no vertical stitching. I vertical stitched the borders 5" apart with no horizontal stitching and this quilt has held up well through multiple washings...no shifting or balling of Warm and White batting. So go for it!

I have made many baby quilts with Warm & Natural batting, some with only diagonal stitching every few inches (according to pkg. directions) and have not had any complaints. You should be fine.
