Default Suggestions for border

After completing the piecing of this top I feel it needs something to break up all the blue. I was thinking if 3" x 5" rectangles in the green, medium blue, purple and orange along sides and bottom and then another band if blue. Or - flying geese then another band if blue. I really don't want it to get too much bigger. Any suggestions are appreciated.

That is a spectacular Mariner's Compass. Maybe pointy triangles for the borders?

I agree with bearisgray...use the same shape triangles that surround the compass in your border. Use the same colors, purple, orange, yellow and light blue. I LOVE your top. Let us know what you decide.

Just my opinion...

Agree with the points. Maybe if that makes it too big, you could trim the blue a bit. That is a beautiful compass.

Beautiful. I like the border idea and if you need to manage the size just trim down the blue a little and use those trimmings as the binding strips.

Thanks for the replies, I like the ideas of using triangles and repeating the colors. Also nice idea to trim off some of the blue if I need to to manage the size. Now to go and figure out the triangles. I'll post picture when I'm done but it may be a while. Also, thank you for the compliments, I'm happy with it so far but can see that it needs a little something else. It's made with the Quilt Smart pattern.

I made the very same quilt - I used a light blue around the compass and a dark blue exactly like yours as a very large border - like 30" or so - my quilt came out huge too - I just did a lot of quilting in all that negative space - I am just binding mine now.

You could also do a " bright" frsme sround the compass. Use the edge of the mattrrss for the frsme size. Then bind it with brights.

That would invilve cutting the blue, but that would not be very difficult.

How about no border and just bind it in the orange or yellow?
