Sunbonnet Sue quilts find their way to me. Here is one I found that needs repairs but the embroidery is lovely. The hands are sewn in like prairie points. Fabric appears date to the 1940s but I am not a fabric specialist. The batting was an old table cloth. There are nineteen different Sunbonnet Sues. The entire quilt, a close-up of the batting, and a couple of the Sunbonnet Sues are depicted here to dazzle you. There are no markings on the back of the quilt to indicate date or maker. Quilted with red thread in vertical lines.

THAT'S Her!!!

Been looking for Momma's Sunbonnet Sue for about 5 years. This is Her. I can get the pattern off the picture and will be able to start making my replacement quilt.

I am so glad my find is helping someone else, too. Are hers embroidered, too? Does she have that wonderful three dimensional hand? Notice that all the dresses are not shaped identically on this quilt. Is the layout the same? Was she set up on strips of pink and white like this one was? The pink in this quilt is blush pink now. I wonder what color pink it was originally....

These look sooooo much like the ones I was left by my grandmother! Mine were made with real flour sack fabrics in the 1030s, but she never put the blocks into a quilt. I took the blocks in the best shape, backed them with super lightweight fusible interfacing (they were on fragile muslin), and put them together with some sashing and cornerstones. I am sure the ones I have were made off the same pattern Ibex showed. You can see even the hand embroidery is the same.

Yes she is done exactly like you lavender hat doll. The hand was not raised. Momma's pink faded out as well. So I would venture a guess that it was a medium to bright pink to begin with.

MaryKa - do you know what year her quilt would have dated from? Do the fabrics match so possibly the 40s?
