Hey:

I want to make a Grandmother Garden with Hexagon's.

I have 2 1/2 inch squares and need to know what size of Hexagons I need.

How are hexagon templates sized?

If they go by the length of one side, I think one inch ones would work (the "diameter" of the hexagon would be two inches)

You could go as large as 2 1/2" including seams, as the top and sides of a hexegon will touch the sides of the 2 1/2" square. You would then cut off the corners to the same length as the top and bottoms so all 8 sides are the same length. Or you could buy pre made at the LQS

Attached is a scan of a tracing around of a template that is 2 inches across (each side is 1 inch) inside a 2-1/2 inch square.

Maybe this will give you a better idea of what you need.

You need 1 in. hex's. I use 2.5 sq. and pin the paper hex in the center, trim off the corners. Make sure to leave at least 1/4 in when triming to turn over on papers. I am assuming you are doing english paper piecing. Have fun with you GMFG. It can be addicting!

In case you ever need to do the math,
point to point, hexagons measure 2 times the length of a side
flat to flat, they measure the length of one side times the square root of three (approx 1.732)
If it fits point to point in a square, it will always fit the other way, too (don't forget the seam allowances!).

Thank you very much. Yes, it is Grandmothers Flower Garden, with a bit different layout. I am working on the border of another, and also have the 3rd. in the works. As I said, it can be addicting!
