When on a budget set aside and start saving for a book. I recommend with Dear Jane to buy the CD and forget the book. You can then print out any of the blocks either with rotary cutting instructions, templates, or foundations. Also the blocks may be printed in any size you like. You get a lot of value for your money that way then save again for the templates that is a 5" square up ruler and the triangle for the outside border. The square up ruler is really great! Specially designed for the Dear Jane Blocks makes it very easy to square them up. When working on Dear Jane I have been using muslin for my background and then blues for my blocks, remember the blocks are small so an 8" square of fabric is more than enough to sew a block. I was asked to do tutorials on hand piecing these but do not have the computer skills and equipment to do so, how ever if you have specific questions feel free to PM me regarding them and I will be happy to respond.
Thank you so much! I'll save for the cd instead of the book.

My guild is using Sylvia's for their block of the month. We do 4 blocks each month, but it wouldn't be hard to do more than that. I really like it so far!
This sounds like fun. It would break the big project down into manageable increments.

I bought all the yardage for the background the same, but as for all the other piecing I just use scraps or pick up fat quarters. One thing that has helped is to take the book and have a spiral binding put on it. Makes it much easier to reference.
I'd never thought about putting a book into a spiral binding, but it would make it much easier to flip pages, etc.

I have started both the DJ in civil war era reproductions and the SBS in Fossil Fern

Maybe keep an eye out on eBay for second hand copies of both books/cd's

they both make great take-along projects if you do them all by hand

When you get your CD I will be happy to give you tips on how to do things that others never thought of. Sorry I don't read program instructions I learn by trial and error. Have had my program for 6 or 7 years. And you can do a lot with it. The best part is the cost is less than what I paid for it. Not that much more than the book!
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi the SBS stands for Sylvia's Bridal Sampler from the Elm Creek Quilt series of books. They are a great series to read. Another WA quilter I see - nice to meet you.
Thanks,

I have been pondering this ever since I read it the first time. Do you have a local library that you could go to? The Sylvia's Bridal Sampler book is at my local library. If you could check out the book just to see the names of the quilt blocks you will be surprised to see that most of them used are the traditional quilt blocks that so many of the "free blocks" listed on many internet sites have. All of them give you the directions, dimensions and instructions on how to cut pieces and put them together. Even the ones that have templates in the SBS book have straight forward instructions on most sites. I am going to start a SBS quilt but I will be using alot of the other traditional sites info in making the blocks because I don't want to do as many paper pieced ones as shown in the SBS books. There are less than 6 blocks that aren't traditional blocks. I hope some of this information is helpful. I really think if you look at some of those free website blocks you will get what you need without spending a penny and that is always a good thing. :D Let me know if I can help or you have any questions.
