Machine raw edge is easy, and lets you practice you machine skills. Two color Hawaiian is a wonderful way to practice needle turn appliqué without small pieces. Freezer paper appliqué with large pieces without sharp points is a great way to practice the appliqué stitch itself without worrying about turning under the seam allowance as you go. If you ever hemmed anything by hand, you can probably do appliqué.
