How about a cool 3-D pattern? Check out ABC 3-D Tumbling Blocks and More, by Marci Baker. She has some techno looking designs that are very man friendly. I also like the idea that you had with the labyrinth walk pattern, which is also 3-D looking.

When I think of quilts for boys or males, I think of more linear-type patterns- log cabin, rail fence, warm wishes. Or more "blocky" type patterns- turning twenty, D9P for example. There are so many nice grey & neutral fabrics out now that would make nice quilts for guys.

Either search for some fabric that has computer stuff on it or see if he would like the new skateboard pattern form MSQC.

You could ask him if he liked this pattern and if he does - ask him for some colr preferences.
He might also like purple - the color has been associatd with royalty (and the minnesota vikings football team).
I think purple and gray, purple and gold, purple with black and white are possible combinations.
I like purple and red or orange -but the RedHat groups have claimed the red/purple combo. Some sunsets have those colors in them.

I was struggling with a similar dilemma this summer. I wanted to make a quilt for my son to take to college. The quilt could not be outdoorsy, sports, or dark colors. He is not at all into anything "manly". He's more the creative, drama, music type. He loves bright colors like hot pink, lime green, purple and orange. He didn't want a theme. Every fabric I put together looked too girly. He told me to stop looking at color as gender. I finally decided on a string quilt, which I'm still working on. I love the QR code idea. I found some "geek" fabric that I'm adding to my quilt that would make a really cool guy theme quilt. It has formulas, pi, mobius strips, double helix, etc. - would be a cool Big Bang Theory quilt.

I made one of my grandsons a triple Irish Chain quilt using his school colors and a basketball print for the background fabric. Using the basketball print for the background fabric made the quilt look like it was for a boy and showed the basketballs very nicely. Could you find some fabric with computers on it? Just a thought. I'm sure anything you decide upon will be great.
