My question is, when you are trying to match seams and are a little off, what do you do? Do you take a pinch in near the end of the seam, do you stretch the fabric, do you close your eyes and pretend it's not there, do you let out the opposing seam?

Ladies and gents, if you are perfect and this never happens to you, please don't tell me so, because it will make me feel REALLY bad. ;)

I'm making my first bargello and, LO AND BEHOLD, some of my pieces are not matching up. Not sure how to proceed. Any hints?

THANK YOU QUILTING BOARD!!!
I cut each square (or whatever) 1/4 inch larger and trim after the seam is done and pressed. Then, if I'm off a little I can trim the block to the right size. I can't tell you how often this has saved frustration! and Seam Ripping!

im an expert at not being perfect on my 1/4 in im sure i hold the record lol. thats why i gave my bargello in a box in pieces to the best quilter i know shes so handy and good at sooo many different things me and my hubby joke that we could drop her off on a deserted island with an army sewing kit and she could quilt/weave herself a raft to float home on lol.

I agree. Putting the side with the extra fabric to the bottom allows it to ease in as you are stitching.

I have this problem, too. A quilting teacher told us to pin the 2 pieces together & if one is a little larger than the other, ease it to fit. Then give the area a shot of steam from the side that is too large. You'd be surprised at how this will shrink it to fit. This works if you are using 100% cotton fabric (which is what we all use anyway, isn't it?)
Try it. I think you'll be pleased with the results as long as you don't have too much to try to shrink in.

I do all of the above! One thing I learned that really helps--if you have one side that is shorter than the other, sew from that side.

During my last quilt class, my instructor taught me that if the seams don't match up perfectly, to put the side with more material on the bottom of the seam when sewing...since the feed dogs will take up a bit of material. It works!

Me, too, and it works most of the time.

I pin the seams and ease the fabric into the space. Looks better than tucks.

When I do bargello, instead of matching the seams, I put the seams at the MID-point of the patch next to it. Voila - much easier and faster and without the angst of matching all those seams. Check out the bargello section, and you'll see a few of the bargello quilts have been done that way. It's almost UNnoticeable unless you're really looking for it.
