Default Thread for big stitch by hand

I'm ready to hand quilt a paper pieced wall hanging and wanted to use DMC 20 red. What needle and /or size would you suggest?

    Thanks for you replies.

Not sure about the needle, but I recommend testing the thread for colorfastness before starting. I think many modern embroidery reds bleed due to restrictions on the chemicals used in their manufacture.

What size thread are you using? For Perle #8 I use chenille needles. For Perle #12 or 12 wt thread on spool I use Thimblelady XL which are similar to sashiko needles. You want something very sharp and thin with a big enough eye for your thread. You might try several out and find what suits you best. I tried a bunch and Thimblelady is my favorite.

My successful big stitching was accomplished following Faintly Artistic's advise. She is exactly accurate.

I'm doing my very first big stitch and using No.8 Perle Cotton and Embroidery needles. It's so much fun! Faintly gave me some great advice. It goes fast!!!!!!
Be sure your thread is colorfast.
    Have fun!

I used Perle Cotton thread as well doing big stitch. Sorry don't remember the number/weight thread nor which needles I used. Probably whatever needles I had at home that the thread fit through the eye and was sharp, lol.

I am with you NJQuilter! I am glad I read this and will look for the proper needles when I do this again. My perfect cotton is number 8. Thanks Fairly Artistic.

I use a size 12 thread and embroidery needle. I like Superior Sew Sassy thread for big stitching.
