I use 5000 yd. cones from Connecting Threads. I use white, black, cream and have silver on order. I have 40+ 1200 yd spools of colors - for applique. When quilting, it depends on whether or not I want the quilting to stand out or just be there.

I use medium-light gray or light dull green for piecing. Peach also seems to be a good color. I find buying cones, while expensive, are a better value than spools. This way I can justify using a higher quality thread.

I use medium beige and grey for piecing most of the time, but I do have a range of colours for top stitching or decorative stitching.

Have you been to the Connecting Threads site? Their cones are $9.99 for 5000 yards. They cone in quite a few neutral colors. Their spools of thread are 1200 yards for $2.49 each. If you but their spools in a set, they are only $2.19 a spool. Quite a good value.

Here's their website:

I usually just use a neutral color unless the fabric is black.

I use mostly white, ecru and black. The other colors I've had a long time, so now I am using them to piece or crafts. Yes we don't need too many colors.

okay... I assume (never should do that, but...) that "mother goose" is like a med-dark gray? and "dolphin gray" is lighter???

What brand of thread names their spool colors like that? Cool !
