All I own are vintage machines and the thread cutter comes off if I am going to earmark the machine for use in my studio. I can not tell you how many times I have cut my finger or hand on the stupid things and start bleeding on what I am working on.
To me they are a waste of time but in the early 1900's it was a neat new thing to have on a machine.

My new bernina 830 has a little pair of scissors icon on the front of the sewing machine , when I finish sewing I just hit the little button and it cuts it right off, The thread cutters on the older machines I have are a real pain but now I am spoiled, the needle threader works great too, My eye sight is not what it used to be , so I do love it
