It's actually better to go with the darker color when you are given a choice of two. I'll choose the darkest grey or taupe I can find that matches the darkest color in the pieces (unless the darkest color is a tiny print, then I match the predominant color). The reason is that that the darker colors will not show as much, they'll get hidden in the "shadow" of the seam edge. I know it sounds illogical, but try it.

The only time I would piece with white is if I were piecing two white fabrics, and that just hasn't happened yet!

That said, yes I have quite a bit of white in my thread collection. Why? Because I too was taught to work with white

I love auriful's silver grey for lighter colors and I use black when piecing dark quilts.

I piece with whatever I have on hand....the stitching does not show and it lets me use up thread I normally wouldn't use for fmq....it may be cotton or poly....the only exception may be if I am sewing a very dark color and then will try to match.

I rarely use white thread for piecing. I use a muddy tan greenish color that blends with most prints. I use natural/tan color for light solids.

I use the color that matches the best, white for white, etc. If it is a mixed up colored quilt I use a neutral. If it is mostly black or blue or whatever I match to it.

i have so many spools of thread left over from other projects that I use whatever is in my drawer. I have also learned about how well grey disappears and when thread is on sale, I will be picking up more grey.

I use beige and if the fabrics are really dark I use gray. I tend to be more colorful with the thread I quilt with.

I hand piece AND hand quilt. I only use YLI in either white or ecru.
