    Default Thread tension

    When top stitching through the layers of a quilt should you tighten or loosen your upper tension.

    It depends on what you are doing. If I am using my walking foot, I usually leave my tension alone but increase my stitch length. If I am FMQing I do change my tension and use a test sandwich to get a balanced stitch. Depending on the thread, sometimes I need to adjust both top tension and bobbin case.

    You should only adjust your tension if it needs to be adjusted. Put together a small (practice sandwich) and quilt a couple lines of stitching, check both sides. If the stitching looks good top & bottom no adjustments are needed.

    I totally agree with Tartan. Only adjust it if it needs to be due to change of weight of thread.
